Research partially supported (2001-03) by the project
Inverse problems and numerical analysis in wave scattering
Project FCT - POCTI/MAT/34735/2000

Research work in Acoustic and Elastic Scattering which
has been carried out by us in the last years consists mainly
in non-destructive obstacle detection.

The direct problem consists in (knowing the incident waves
and the shape of the obstacle) determining the scattered wave.
Here, research work was focused in applying the Boundary
Finite Element Method to calculate the elastic scattered wave
produced by one or more plane cracks. The far-field patterns
and the scattering cross sections obtained showed some
advantages of this method.

Associated to this subject is the calculation of the resonance
frequencies. We have determined the complex resonance
frequencies for some cracks and studied the relation with the
scattering cross section peaks.
The trapping case was also considered.

The inverse obstacle problem consists in (knowing the incident
waves and the scattered wave) determining the shape of the
obstacle. Research work in this area was mainly focused in
developping numerical schemes and uniqueness/characterization
theorems.

Research in detection of defects on materials, like cracks or
inhomogeneities in a bounded domain is being carried also.
