 Abstract.  
Variable Toeplitz matrices are generated by functions of two variables
and share with common Toeplitz matrices a few important properties 
which come on light considering the algebra generated by sequences
of such matrices. These considerations allow to deduce Szegö type
theorems which asymptotically describe the distribution of the 
eigenvalues.
