A celebration of his life and work

Lisbon,  April 18 2008 to June 19 2009


    In the period between April 18 2008 and June 19 2009, both the general and the scientific communities dedicate a series of initiatives to the memory of Aureliano de Mira Fernandes acknowledging his great stature as a man, a mathematician and a professor. Its opening session took place at Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão (ISEG) on April 18 2008, and it will be closed by a historical conference and a Mathematical Relativity conference to be held at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) on June 17, 18 and 19 2009.
   One of the key goals of this celebration is to bring Mira Fernandes important work to the knowledge of today researchers showing the relevance of his work in the scientific and academic context of his time. In fact, his work reflects his commitment to research as well as to higher education at both institutions where he was a Professor: IST and today ISEG.
    For  the excellence of his work,  Mira Fernandes is one of the greatest portuguese mathematicians of the 20th century. Therefore,  the publication of his complete works  by the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian as one of the initiatives of these celebrations is highly relevant for the scientific community.
